"The Spot Burger" at The Burger Spot in Plymouth

My quest to find the perfect burger led me to downtown Plymouth, MI’s “The Burger Spot”.

I’ll admit, I had high expectations for this place.  It is, after all, called The Burger Spot, so you can imagine what is was expecting.   Being a connoisseur of burgers, my standards are set pretty high, and The Burger Spot didn’t let me down.

The menu had many fantastic options from which to choose.  After much careful consideration, I settled on “The Spot Burger”.  Adorned with Bacon and Cheddar Cheese – this 1/3 lb burger with lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles piqued my interest, and I couldn’t resisti an order of the Burger Spot’s famous fries.

The burger was cooked to perfection, the freshness of the bun all the way to the juicy burger itself.  It doesn’t hurt that the owner also has the freshest of condiments that he picks up daily from the local vegetable supplier.

I also love the atmosphere in the restaurant.  You order at the counter and they bring your burger to you. The murals on the walls are great to look at and there is also a vintage video game to play while you wait.

Now if you don’t want a burger they have other items to choose, from chicken and turkey burgers to the Black bean and Tofu Burgers.   There is truly something for everyone. So next time you are in Plymouth,  stop in to the Burger Spot.

The Working Man’s Lunch – $5.49

My next stop on this burger train takes me to Starlite Diner & Coney Island in Burton.  Starlite Diner and Coney Island  is a genuine family-owned spot just north of I-69 on Center Rd in Burton (just minutes from Flint). I stopped in for lunch after several people raved about the burgers.  This casual and inviting restaurant is your classic diner complete with bright red booths, walls adorned with original Flint paraphernalia and a counter where the working man can sit for a quick (and I mean quick) lunch.  I really like the atmosphere at this place and it was very busy, always a good sign.

As I settled in to look over the menu, a sign on the counter caught my eye – “The Working Man’s Lunch”.  An unbelievable bargain at $5.49, this special included not only the famous burger but also a Flint Style Coney, fries and a drink (not bad).  Since I had never tried a Flint Coney before, this was an unexpected bonus on my burger journey. The Flint Coney is different from a Detroit Coney.  The Flint Coney is a hot dog with ground beef and a red sauce, onions and mustard – it was pretty good, but let’s not forget the task at hand.  I was there for the burger after all.

The burger did not disappoint. I asked the manager to tell me a bit about this Flint town favorite and he mentioned that they grind the beef fresh every day.  This burger was so packed full of flavor, I wasn’t at all surprised by that little factoid.  A cool feature offered at Starlite:  You can order the burger with as many patties as you can eat…make it a double, triple, quad or more.  If I hadn’t ordered the special, I would have gone for at least a double for sure.

The Working Man's Lunch - a bargain at $5.49!

I was really pleased with the entire experience, the service was great, the food was satisfying, and I do like the atmosphere as well.  I will say if you are in the Flint area the Starlite Diner & Coney Island is a great stop for lunch and the Working Man’s Lunch gets a Solid 4 out of 5 Grease Stained Shirts.

Tavern on the Main

Tavern Burger – Bacon, Swiss Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato & Onion – $6.95

I love it when I come across a really satisfying burger.  I was in Clawson making a few calls on my way to Royal Oak and decided I would stop into Tavern on the Main to try this burger I had heard about.  One of my favorite things to do for lunch is to grab a good burger and watch a little ESPN.

Immediately I find a seat in a part of the bar where I can get a little work done (gotta love free WiFi), eat a burger and warm up a little.  The server came up to the table to take my order.  Since I’d been in and out of restaurants all day and had burger on the brain, the choice was simple…“Tavern Burger!”

A few minutes later my lunch arrived complete with a knife sticking out of the giant, juicy picture of perfection.  The server informed me that many patrons like to cut the burger in half (check out the photo above if you’re wondering why).

The burger arrived nice and hot.  The bun, oh the bun… The soft, grilled Brioche bun added an entire new level of deliciousness to a burger that was already dangerously close to perfect.  It was grilled to a perfect, juicy medium and the flavor was fantastic.  I have to say, this was one of the better burgers I’ve had in a while and I’ve had a few burgers in my day.

The Tavern on the Main has just found its way into my rotation of favorite burger spots.  The service was great.  I felt as though I had been going there for years.  The Tavern Burger did not disappoint, living up to the rave reviews I’d heard from others.

I am going to rate the Tavern Burger a near-perfect 4.5 out of 5 Grease Stained Shirts (my personal burger rating system).
